What Age Should My Child Start Dance Classes?

What Age Should My Child Start Dance Classes?

If you’ve been wondering whether your little one is old enough (or maybe already a bit old) to start dance, you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions we get asked the most at Yarra Heights Dance Academy.

The short answer is that there’s no single perfect age. But there are some good guides that can help you decide what’s right for your child.

From around age 3

Most dance schools, including ours, start taking little dancers from about age 3. At this age, classes are less about technique and more about movement, music, and having fun. Kids this age are building coordination, learning to follow simple instructions, and getting comfortable being part of a group.

If your three or four year old loves music, twirls around the lounge room, or copies dance moves off the telly, they’re probably ready to give it a go.

Ages 5 to 7

This is a really common starting age too. By now, most kids can follow a routine, take turns, and sit still (mostly) for a few minutes when needed. It’s a lovely age to start ballet, jazz, or a general dance class, because they pick things up quickly and love the structure of learning “real” steps.

Ages 8 to 10

Plenty of kids start dance for the first time at this age too, and they do brilliantly. Older beginners often progress faster because they can concentrate longer and understand instructions more easily. If your child is a bit older and has never danced before, please don’t think they’ve missed the boat. We see this all the time, and these kids often surprise themselves with how quickly they improve.

What actually matters more than age

Honestly, readiness has less to do with the exact number on the calendar and more to do with your child. Ask yourself:

Do they enjoy moving to music?
Can they follow along in a small group setting, like at kinder or school?
Are they curious and keen to try something new?

If you can answer yes to most of these, they’re ready.

Why dance is worth it at any age in this range

Beyond the obvious fitness and coordination benefits, dance gives kids a sense of belonging. They make friends, learn to work as part of a team, and build confidence that carries into the classroom and beyond. For a lot of our mums, that sense of community is just as important as the dancing itself. Watching your child light up after class, or seeing them proudly show you a new step, is something special.

Come and see for yourself

The best way to know if your child is ready is to bring them along and let them try it. There’s no pressure, and no need to sign up for anything on the spot.
